Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to give her the chance to learn about art and literature, or even theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great tool to engage in social activism. DuVernay had a mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to utilize art as a method to express herself. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer and was motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990 she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish inside the house of a member of jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency.
